March, 2011— Over the past weekend we had the pleasure of being with my brother, his friends and our extended family, to celebrate a significant birthday on his part. (I won’t say which one; that would be giving too much away, and it’s not the center of my story anyway.)

He is my only sibling and after he survived an early childhood of being frequently tormented by yours truly, we became close friends.

And on this evening last weekend (March 5) this Pisces person was all smiles, as well he should have been. For on that evening just a few hours ago, there was lots of love floating around. Love of various sorts and levels of course, as in the love from his wife, his children, his family and his friends might differ — but a true sense of mutual adoration was present.

This got me to thinking about how important it is to always have frequent interaction with another human being in your life, regardless of how old you become. If you’re able to get around, you should be getting around friends and family more often.

When people gather in groups, especially when they’re in an enclosure that brings them physically close so conversation must ensue, it makes the adrenaline perk, interest pique and camaraderie grow. In most of us, it’s natural that we should be interested in hearing from someone else, and then have them return the favor — and situations like this always allow for the conversation to flow and the smiles to build. It’s just … nice.

However, I know these situations are not always perfect, and conditions that some have come to refer to as “Thanksgiving Syndrome” may sometimes emerge, causing arguments, tears, or worse.

But all in all, getting together with those you know and love, plus those you met for the first time on that particular evening, when you discovered something in common that might extend to another day, is not only uplifting and good for the soul, I’ve read where it can actually extend your life.

So get to it.
