La Jolla, California, November 2011— Childhood obesity isn’t news anymore. Going back 15 years or so, when the word began going out nationwide that obesity in children had grown from a concern to an epidemic, a few dents were made, but there was never enough money to mount a concerted effort; and to put it bluntly, deep down, people didn’t care that much if it didn’t affect them directly—and besides, what can we do about anyway, they were thinking.  Kashi.com

The epidemic hasn’t disappeared in the wind. Today, one in three children living in the United States is considered obese, and 15% of all adults are running up the numbers on the scale as well. And few understand why.

The folks at the Kashi company are stepping up to do what they can, by featuring their Kashi REAL Project™, a program designed to raise awareness of what it calls the “Real Food Deficit” and promote the work of organizations that are providing valued resources and education to communities nationwide.  This month, the company is spotlighting HealthCorps® on its website and Kashi Facebook page – and for everyone who tells their friends about the Real Food Deficit and HealthCorps’ efforts via the “Like” button, Kashi will donate $10 (up to $50,000) to the organization.

One of the objectives of this program is to narrow the gap between a healthy community and reality, which involves everything and everybody from families without the resources to prepare wholesome meals for their families and underserved neighborhoods that don’t have access to fresh produce, to kids growing up without positive influences and nutrition education.

The Kashi REAL Project will bring attention to these issues and the dedicated organizations that introduce, for example, healthy eating habits to kids, double the value of food stamps at farmers markets and teach hands-on cooking classes, providing life-long tools people need to plan and prepare healthy meals for themselves and their families.

Whether it’s teaching kids how to cook with healthy ingredients, or bringing fresh produce to the 13.5 million people live in “food deserts,” Kashi says it is committed to making positive change and encourages everyone to join them in this effort.

The Kashi REAL Project is more than just making a donation—it’s about bringing attention to the issue.  And by raising awareness through social media like Facebook, it’s a way to empower people to inspire change in their own communities.
