Hood River, Oregon, August 2010 — VegNews, America’s premier vegetarian lifestyle magazine has announced it has bestowed Tofurky Vegan Pizza with one of its Best of Show awards at Natural Products Expo West, held this past spring in Anaheim, California. Oregon’s Turtle Island Foods is the creator and manufacturer of Tofurky products.

VegNews named the new offering from Turtle Island Foods one of the year’s hottest new vegetarian products to be found at the nation’s largest natural products trade show. The magazine’s team of editors scoured the show for the best new vegetarian products and awarded just 12 companies top honors. These Best of Show Awards are the only one of its kind at the event that attracted 56,000 attendees and nearly 2,000 exhibitors.

“Turtle Island Foods is a leader in the natural food industry and continues to develop high-quality vegetarian products. We are pleased to honor your accomplishments with a VegNews Best of Show Award,” says VegNews Publisher Joseph Connelly.

The Tofurky brand is one of the highest profile names in the vegetarian foods industry. Their pizzas are a unique combination of Tofurky meat alternatives and Daiya, tapioca-based non dairy cheese that actually melts! The pizzas come in three flavors: Vegan Cheese Pizza, Italian Sausage and Fire Roasted Veggies and Tofurky Pepperoni.

The revolutionary Daiya cheese tastes, shreds, melts and stretches like dairy-based cheese. However, it is not made with casein, the protein found in dairy products or soy, common to many other non-dairy cheese alternatives. In fact, Daiya cheese does not contain any common allergens, animal products or cholesterol and is made with nutritious planted-based ingredients.

Great news for a country like the U.S., where its citizens consume an average of 350 slices of pizza per second. For those of you who like to imagine those stats in more finite ways that amounts to 37,000 acres of pizza per year, roughly an area the size of two-and-a-half Manhattans.

As popular and tasty as pizza is, there is a nutritional price to pay with cholesterol, sodium, fat and saturated fat. But what if you could have the great taste of pizza, with its delicious cheese, and improve its nutritional profile? That is the mission of Tofurky Pizza.

In 1995, Turtle Island Foods’ Tofurky® roast brought vegetarians back to the Thanksgiving table by providing a high protein, cholesterol free option to people who had been left out of the celebration. Today they’ve expanded that mission to the pizza arena to include everyone in the fun. You might say their goal is “No pizza eater left behind!” The pizzas can be found at natural food and grocery stores across this pizza-crazy country.
