Parsippany, New Jersey, January 2012— For those of you not in the know, “XLVI” (or “46” for those of you who need to brush up on their Latin), refers to what has turned out to be one of the biggest global events of all time; The Super Bowl.

And this year, Indianapolis is host to the big game, which will begin late in the afternoon of February 5. And if you’re doing your own hosting this time around, it’s time to start planning.

Foods that are always popular with tailgaters, both those confronting the elements to others remaining cozily inside, warmed by the tube and the other bodies around them, include sandwiches of some kind. This would include both subs and burgers, and more than likely topped with some kind of premium quality cheese.

Sixth Taste

Everywhere, January 2012— As we were growing up, many of us were taught that our tongues could detect four essential tastes: sweet, salty, sour and bitter.

Anything else, we were told, was a product of aroma and texture. But it always seemed like there weren't enough choices to explain the entire range of tastes; could it really be that the only taste behind the deliciousness of a butter-doused morel mushroom, or a perfectly grilled steak, was a salty one?

Looking Back III

January 2012 – Over the past two years around this time, your editors have made mention of what it was like in the 1930’s and how much worse it was than what we’ve had to endure since 2007 – about the time things began looking bad.

This is Part III.

We mentioned earlier about how some special people came from that experience – leaders who helped Americans find an inner strength, which was later paid back as the U.S. rose in power and influence throughout the world.
We also pointed out that as a group, back then we were used to doing more with less, were more loyal, and in some cases easier to convince then as now. That, and the fact that folks back then didn’t have to contend with 24/7 in-your-face news coverage. In many ways, this technological phenomenon has created everything from false hopes to misunderstanding to confusion.

Everywhere, USA, January 2012— What do films such as Total Recall, The Notebook, Gothika, Inception, Anastasia, Memento, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind — and The Bourne Trilogy, have in common?

Besides earning big at the box office, they all invoke memory loss as part of their message.

Even though amnesia and other situations that involve memory loss are not common, they’ve been featured often in films, dating back to the pre-1927 silent features.

While most professionals conclude that cinematic depictions of memory loss bear no resemblance to the real thing, filmgoers continue to flock to the theatres when the plot involves memory.  www.prevagen.com

Everywhere, USA, December 2011— As we roll closer to the big year-end holidays, and as we think about the food and drink that we’ll consume between now and then, we thought a discussion of how to best go about enjoying this pastime, and maybe improving on it a little as you get into 2012 would be in order.

We’ve all read about how the foods we eat affect us. There are foods that we should seek out and consume in quantity, and those we should avoid like the plague.

Hood River, Oregon, December 2011— A good percentage of everybody running around out there are vegetarians, and it used to be that when the end-of-the-year Holidays came around, it was a lonely time for this bunch.

Back in the day, depending on where you’d look, you’ll find this group to be somewhat ostracized, removed from the celebration, left to consume only the side dishes.

But then, in 1995, with the introduction of the Tofurky Roast, Holiday feasting began looking up for vegetarians.

Salt Lake City, Utah, December 2011— The end of 2011 has seen a flurry of medical studies sharing a common conclusion: sitting at a desk for eight hours a day can be a hazardous occupation.

From Cancer (via The American Institute for Cancer Research, to Alzheimer’s Disease (via the University of California, San Francisco), to Diabetes (via the University of Missouri), the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle have spawned phrases like “death by desk” and given new meaning to “this job is killing me.”
