Chicago, Illinois, January 2013— In 1885, Claire Cretors’ great grandfather invented a machine that forever changed snacking: The commercial popcorn machine.
126 years later, his great-granddaughter is writing the next chapter for the Cretors family. This time, with the popcorn itself.
Made with all-natural ingredients completely free of GMO’s, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, G.H. Cretors’ new signature Chicago Mix combines caramel corn and cheese corn in the same bag, offering addictive, simultaneous hits of sweet, salty, crunchy and cheesy. The caramel corn is made the old-fashioned way: by hand, in copper kettles. Cane sugar, brown rice syrup (a non-GMO alternative to corn syrup with a lower glycemic impact) and real butter is heated over aflame and then stirred slowly by hand to develop its rich complex flavor and crunch.

Everywhere USA, January 2013— Both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and the Living Building Challenge (LBC) were created with the same goal in mind: to encourage more sustainability and resource conservation in architecture, design, construction and building operations. LEED, a program of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is well known in architecture, building and design circles as the standard for certifying the green attributes of new and retrofitted structures (and even entire neighborhoods).
Developers can reference LEED’s 110-point rating system to inform choices regarding design, technology, siting, landscaping and other elements of building or renovation processes. Structures using the greenest versions of each element would qualify for the highest LEED rating, Platinum (followed by Gold, Silver, and just plain Certified).

Everywhere USA, January 2013 — In between the two end of year holidays, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that flu activity was spiking in the United States, with some still having to gather, and later travel in large groups.
While the dreaded stomach flu began hitting homes this winter, a new “feel better drink” called B.R.A.T.® is making getting through vomiting and diarrhea a lot easier. The B.R.A.T. drinks are doctor recommended and based on the historically used Bananas, Rice, Applesauce & Toast (B.R.A.T.) diet, recommended dietary additions to someone suffering from stomach or gastro-intestinal distress.
The B.R.A.T. Feel Better Drinks are a new spin on this well-known B.R.A.T. Diet®, which combines an organic brown rice base, bananas & apples into a delicious and soothing new drink packed with electrolytes, zinc, calcium, vitamins and nutrients.

Not exactly, but you can maybe get close, and do it the healthy way, not like Dorian, who, if you’ll remember, succumbed to vanity and instant age when the portrait of him as a young man gave him away. Literally.
Out in just the past few days and already high on the Amazon.com diet, beauty, fashion and health categories, a new book, titled 7 Years Younger, is causing a buzz.
Compiled by the editors of Good Housekeeping, 7 Years Younger is a revolutionary, scientifically backed and comprehensive anti-aging book that helps women look and feel 7 years younger in just 7 weeks – with visible results in just one week.

Woodland Hills, California, January 2013 — Anthem Blue Cross members will soon have a more convenient way to see a doctor for non-emergency needs when their own doctor is not readily available. By accessing the new LiveHealth Online service, at livehealthonline.com, via computer, members can choose a doctor and address their health issues live via two-way video.
This new online care service, LiveHealth Online, will launch in the first quarter of 2013 initially to small and large-group fully-insured customers and self-funded national employers. Doctors will offer members live consultations from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, including holidays.
“The LiveHealth Online care solution offers a secure means of reaching board-certified primary care doctors on demand, especially when consumers find it inconvenient to leave work or home and go to a doctor’s office,” said Pam Kehaly, president of Anthem Blue Cross. |

Atlanta, Georgia, January 2013 — The Coca-Cola Company is reinforcing its efforts to work together with American communities, business and government leaders to find meaningful solutions to the complex challenge of obesity.
A two-minute video, titled “Coming Together,” debuted recently on national cable news. The video encourages everyone to be mindful that all calories count in managing your weight, including those in Coca-Cola products and in all foods and beverages. Its purpose is to highlight some of the specifics behind the Company’s ongoing commitment to deliver more beverage choices, including low- and no-calorie options, and to clearly communicate the calorie content of all its products.
A second spot, called “Be OK,” debuted this week on American Idol. “Be OK” makes it clear right up front that a can of Coca-Cola has 140 calories. This spot also encourages people to find ways to have some fun in burning off those calories.

Chicago, Illinois, January 2013 — At the beginning of each year, dating to when we first started becoming aware of nutrition and reasonable weight, millions of Americans have resolved to lose weight and eat healthy.
But resolutions are notoriously broken. To help you get through this, registered dietitians—the food and nutrition experts—weigh in on why resolutions fail and how to best set yourself up for success in 2013.
“It may be tempting to focus on losing weight fast, leading many to turn to dangerous fads diets and crash diets,” said registered dietitian and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson Angela Ginn. “However, research shows that slow, healthy weight loss is more likely to last than dramatic weight changes.”

Everywhere, January 2013 — (With New Year’s Eve come and gone, this story arrived a bit late to reflect good timing, but it’s still good stuff to know. Surprised us, anyway. Ed.)
When you attend your next function, and if you happen to be drinking alcohol, you might want to reach for some asparagus. According to a 2009 study in the Journal of Food Science, asparagus may aid the body in accelerating the metabolism of alcohol.
Exit the hangover?
