SOY NEWS
Meeting Nutrient Requirements With Soy

Soy can be included in the diet at several different levels and can be tailored to your individual health needs. We have divided these needs into health promotion, preventive health and disease management.

Health Promotion:
One serving of soy per day appears to offer health benefits related to soy's antioxidant properties and blood vessel health promotion.

Preventive Health:
Two servings of soy per day seem to have additional benefits beyond those listed above, but these health benefits are not as well defined.

Disease Management: Three servings of soy per day offers further benefits beyond those of general health promotion. In particular, this amount of soy benefits cholesterol levels, helps to preserve bone mineral density (prevents osteoporosis) and protects individuals from kidney disease.

What is a serving of soy?
Currently we define a serving of soy as one that provides 7-8 grams of soy protein and about 15 milligrams of isoflavones. It is important to note that some soy protein preparations are low in isoflavones and may not provide the full benefits. As a general rule, soy protein concentrates are relatively low in isoflavones. The table in the recommended serving sizes section lists the amounts of different foods that constitute a serving of soy.
